Hair tips point toward

The structure tensor gives the axis of each hair, not which end is the root. Auto mode measures which end along each axis is darker and thicker (the root) and points the arrow the other way. Use a compass direction or the whorl when a photo defeats that cue; arrows without heads mean the direction is unresolved.
